Visitor Services and Facilities Associate,Weekend
Position Duties and Description
The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) San José seeks a community-oriented, responsible individual who will assume a critical role in communication with visitors and other outside parties at the ICA’s main exhibition space in downtown San José. Essential duties include supporting the visitor services front desk, which serves as the main check in for all guests. This individual acts as a steward of the ICA’s exhibition programs, providing information about programs and events, overseeing the safety of the works in the exhibition space, and answering general inquiries to the main phone line. They will also be required to work special events during select evenings and weekends.

Reports to: Curator or Exhibition Manager
Location: Institute of Contemporary Art San José
Type: Part-time, Non-exempt
Hours: 10-15 hours/week
Schedule: Saturday – Sunday 12-5pm and occasional evenings. Open to change as the museum opens further.
Compensation: $16/hr
Qualifications
The successful candidate is pursuing a degree or a career in fine arts, art history, museums, community engagement or another related creative field. Background, interest or experience with contemporary art is preferred. This is an entry-level opportunity with a preferable one year commitment with tailored career advancement opportunities. This is not a remote position
Responsibilities
- Visitor engagement and management of the front desk: greet all visitors, offering to answer questions and provide additional information on upcoming programs and events
- Open and close the gallery with daily disinfecting procedures to all touch areas and turning on and off multimedia works (if needed)
- The ICA San Jose is currently open Friday – Sunday 12-5pm, but this is subject to change
- Maintain excellent understanding of current exhibitions
- Keep lounge materials and gallery materials up to date, print gallery guides, and neatly display on front counter
- Perform the daily operations of the ICA including, but not limited to, answering phones, mail, email and recording attendance for daily admission and events
- Event support as needed for First Fridays (First Friday of the month) and Art After Dark (Second Thursday of the month), and further public programming events
- Lead group tours
- Facilities and Operations: duties include restocking facilities, replacing gallery lights, dusting, and condition reports for artworks in galleries
The ideal candidate will be familiar with
- Adobe creative suite
- Microsoft Office suite
- Mailchimp
- CRM/Etapestry
- Admin role on social media sites (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
Requirements
- Comfortable with public speaking
- Flexible and collaborative approach to working with a team
- Excellent writing and overall communication skills
- Demonstrated organizational ability and proficient computer skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
