For the next program in our series ICA Social Club: A Master Class in Collecting Contemporary Art, gallerists Claudia Altman-Siegel (Altman Siegel, San Francisco), Brock Brake (pt.2 Gallery, Oakland), Monique Meloche (Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago), and Jessica Silverman (Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco) will join ICA San José Executive Director and Chief Curator Alison Gass in a discussion about insider tips and tricks for collecting contemporary art. Learn about the artists they represent, the real scoop on art fairs, and best practices for purchasing art from galleries.

About The Gallerists
Claudia Altman-Siegel is the owner of Altman Siegel Gallery which was established in 2009. Altman Siegel’s program focuses on internationally recognized, museum-level artists whose work contributes to the cultural dialogue domestically and abroad. The gallery presents significant Bay Area artists and brings international emerging and established artists to San Francisco for the first time.  She is one of the founders of 8-bridges and currently sits on the board of directors for the Art Dealers Association of America.

Brock Brake is the owner of pt.2 Gallery in downtown Oakland, CA, established in 2018. pt.2 presents some of the most influential emerging artists coming out of the Bay Area and beyond. Brake’s program celebrates the diverse and vibrant art scene in Oakland while disrupting art world hierarchies. In addition to the gallery, pt.2 has nine below market studios housing around 20 different creatives working in a variety of media. Brake believes in the importance of offering affordable, safe spaces in Oakland for creatives in a time when many art spaces are closing. Brake began his career as a photographer, holding a BA in photography from Columbia College Chicago. Prior to opening pt.2 gallery Brake was the co-owner of Athen B. Gallery from 2015-2018.

Monique Meloche founded her eponymous gallery in Chicago’s West Loop in 2001 with an international roster of emerging artists working in all media. Our program has been diverse and inclusive since its inception, and we continue to be a bellwether for artistic talents early or under-recognized in their careers like Rashid Johnson, Amy Sherald, Ebony G. Patterson, Sanford Biggers and Brendan Fernandes. Meloche has consistently presented conceptually challenging programming in Chicago and at art fairs internationally with an emphasis on institutional outreach. Meloche holds a BA from the University of Michigan, and Masters of Art History and Theory from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She spent 6 years at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago as an assistant curator, then went on to direct both Rhona Hoffman and Kavi Gupta galleries before striking out on her own and will celebrate the gallery’s 20th anniversary in 2021.

Jessica Silverman is the founder and CEO of a contemporary art gallery with an international reputation for curating compelling exhibitions, building artists’ careers, and collaborating with collectors who are keen on positive provenance. Her mission is to support artists whose relevance to contemporary culture is such that museums want to understand and embrace their work. For nine years, Silverman sat on the San Francisco Arts Commission where she oversaw the acquisition of public art and has, since then, advised property developers. Silverman is currently renovating a new gallery space at 621 Grant Avenue (corner of California) in San Francisco’s Chinatown. It will open in March 2021.
