Join us on Sunday, March 15th for an engaging panel discussion with artists from Sense of Self during the closing reception of our Winter Exhibitions.

Art historian and curator Jacqueline Francis will moderate a discussion on representation of marginalized communities in art and how portraiture can be used to challenge assumptions and stereotypes. Panelists will include artists from Sense of Self including Marcela Pardo Ariza, Erica Deeman, and Jamil Hellu.

ABOUT JACUELINE FRANCIS:
Jacqueline Francis, Ph.D., is the author of Making Race: Modernism and “Racial Art” in America (2012) and co-editor of Romare Bearden: American Modernist (2011).  She has lectured at universities, museums, and scholarly meetings, including those held at the National Gallery of Art, King’s College London, Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III, Yale University, and the University of Okayama, Japan. She is the Board President of the Queer Cultural Center (QCC), a multidisciplinary resource and advocacy site for LGBT artistic expression in San Francisco. She is a recipient of a 2017-18 Individual Artist Commission from the San Francisco Arts Commission. She received her BA from Dartmouth College; her MA from University of Wisconsin, and her PhD from Emory University.

Marcela Pardo Ariza:
Marcela Pardo Ariza (b. Bogotá, Colombia) is a visual artist and curator that explores transhistorical and intergenerational kinship, alternate forms of representation while celebrating the erroneous through constructed photography, prop-like objects and handmade bending frames and installations. Ariza is the recipient of the Tosa Studio Award 2017, a Murphy & Cadogan Contemporary Art Award and an Alternative Exposure grantee (2018). Ariza holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, is a co-founder of Womxn Art Handlers and a current member of the Curatorial Council at Southern Exposure.

Erica Deeman:
Erica Deeman’s (b. 1977) work visualizes themes of identity, gender and race. Through the portrait she engages her audience to question the way in which they evaluate the face through their own visual expectations and historical portrayals. She holds a BA (Hons) in Public Relations from Leeds Beckett University, U.K. and a BFA in Photography from Academy of Art, San Francisco, CA. Deeman has had solo exhibitions at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Archive, Berkeley, CA, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA, and has been in domestic and international group exhibitions in the UK, Ireland, and California.

Jamil Hellu:
Jamil Hellu (born in Curitiba, Brazil) is a visual artist whose work revolves primarily around representations of cultural identity, queer sexuality, and community. He is the recipient of the San Francisco Artist Commission’s 2019 Individual Artist Grant and the Fleishhacker Foundation’s 2018 Eureka Fellowship Award. Hellu received the Kala Art Institute Fellowship and was selected for the Artist-in-Residence Program at Recology San Francisco, where he presently serves a board member. He was awarded the Graduate Fellowship at Headlands Center for the Arts and was granted a six-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Hellu studied at Cabrillo College (1999), the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA 2003), and Stanford University (MFA 2010). He currently teaches photography in the Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University.
