About The Vaccine Vial Project
The ICA San José and SVCreates invites West Coast artists to submit proposals for the Vaccine Vial Project – a large-scale, installation at a local hospital, health center or community vaccination site to premier summer of 2021. Art can be an important tool in helping us process and memorialize difficult experiences and collective grief. This project asks artists to reflect on the loss and emotional toll we collectively experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, while honoring the hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance of our healthcare workers. Installed during the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, this project will prominently feature empty vaccine vials. We hope the installation evokes responses, spurs conversations and connects with all the communities we serve in Santa Clara County.
Artists will be provided an $8,000 stipend to go towards the production of the project, including materials, transportation and installation. The artist will be provided with the empty vials.
Eligibility
Open to West Coast artists in all media.
Review Process and Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed by representatives from – ICA San José, SVCreates, VMC Foundation and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
The criteria by which we will be considering each proposal are as follows:
- Artistic strength and emotional impact of project
- Accessibility to engage a diverse audience, with emphasis on communities that have been impacted the most by the COVID-19 pandemic
- Vaccine vials will be provided and must be used in the project (artist can anticipate to have access to around one thousand empty vaccine vials, it is not require to use the full amount)
- Feasibility of project (scale, scope, legal, financial, and otherwise)
- Although not required, it is ideal that the artwork will be able to be transported to other locations
Timeline
- Project submissions due May 24th
- Artists will be notified by June 11th
- Project installed late August – September 2021 (tentative)
